Uh huh. This made me stop and look and think “amazing!” Then it made me go EEUGH!
How would like your food to interact with you as you eat it? How about if your food was made from materials other than organic ie. synthetic cells?
Take a look at this conceptual film:
And now take a closer look:
The is what the artist (oh yes, it’s one of those!), Minsu Kim, has to say about it:
This project explores new culinary experiences through developments in synthetic biology, and finds its lineage in haute cuisine and molecular gastronomy. I designed future dining experience where food behaves like a living creature entertaining us through an empathetic connection – what if food became alive like a fictional character? What if food was able to play with our cutlery and create hyper-sensations in our mouth? Synthetic biotech has already started to create artificial life in organic forms1)2), breathing life into artificial digestible forms in not merely a fantasy. In this respect I propose a future dining experience where food takes a life-form. In a material way, I experiment which kinds of impressions could be designed into the life-like food and how it would affect our dining experience.
Well….I don’t know if I’m hankering for my food to “entertain” me. I get that it’s in the name of art and really you couldn’t get more of a modern machine than yours truly. I do love the conceptual thinking behind it and suppose it’s a bit like stepping into the unknown like the first time you try a rollercoaster. BUT. I’ve come over all squeamish. I just want my food to lay there prettily on my plate and play dead. No sudden movements, no wriggling back to life, absolute bloody stillness.
And as for imagining what it does in my stomach after I’ve swallowed it? Let’s just not go there!
